STM: From the Ground Up and Back

Texas, March 4th, 2025 – The Space Security, Safety, and Sustainability (SSSS) Program at The University of Texas at Austin’s (UT) Strauss Center for International Security and Law and the Cockrell School of Engineering, in partnership with the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), MITRE, and NorthStar Earth and Space, will hold the 11th annual Space Traffic Management conference, “STM: From the Ground Up and Back”.

CEO Stewart Bain examines the issues with young professionals and students taking on the challenges of STM at The University of Texas at Austin’s (UT) Strauss Center for International Security and Law.

Space activities enable and generate profoundly important data, analytics, and downstream services, that are rapidly evolving as the Space Sector grows exponentially. The entire space economy is inextricably intertwined with the global economy, and both are relying on smooth and reliable space operations and services.

Presently, with the rapidly increasing demands that commercial growth is putting on LEO orbits and safe operations in space, there is an equally accelerated need to provide a framework that will consider the complexities associated with all aspects of space traffic management (STM) from a technical & specification, business & operations, and legal & policy perspective.

Building orbital capacity, enabling space commerce, ensuring security of space activity are the desired outcomes of successfully coordinating systems tackling STM. Transparency and norms of behaviour spanning diverse systems, across jurisdictions, will safeguard sustainability. Narrow interests must be incentivised to avoid a tragedy of the commons.

Join our CEO Stewart Bain as he examines the issues with young professionals and students taking on the challenges of STM.
